Lynn Ackerson
Lynn Ackerson started contra dancing in 1998, when a friend decided she needed to get a more interesting social life. She was immediately hooked and began attending as many dances as possible, and even went to her first week-long camp that same year. She called her first dance at Sierra Swing in the summer of 1999, and by June, 2000, she'd progressed to calling a full evening of dancing. That same summer, she took Larry Edelman's square dance callers' class at Pinewoods and became excited about the variety that traditional squares can bring to an evening of contra dancing.

Lynn is known for creating a warm, friendly atmosphere and for choosing dances that are interesting and accessible. Both her teaching and her calling are clear and easy to follow. In fact, musicians have commented on how concisely she teaches the dances, saying things like, "You're done already? We haven't even had time to pick a tune!" She regularly calls all over Northern California, and has also called in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Atlanta, GA, Bloomington, IN, and Ottawa, Canada. Her motto is "Have cards, will travel."

Lynn has served on the BACDS Board of Directors since 1999, where she is most concerned about welcoming and retaining new dancers. She attends as many local dances and camps as possible, because, she says, "That's where the joy is."
